Event and Occupancy Counting
?
The Hay Festival is one of the worlds’ leading art and literature festivals, bringing readers and writers together to share stories and ideas in events live and online.
It attracts 100,000-plus visitors over 11 days to engage with the world’s great writers, poets, philosophers, historians, scientists, comedians, and musicians. It has moved to a large, tented village on the outskirts of town with 10 venues, pop-up cafes, shops and restaurants.
The Hay Festival 2022 Wales edition ran from 26th May to 5th June, and it was the first time the festival main site was monitored by a live occupancy system.
The system deployed by Axiomatic covered a 10m wide main entrance, an 8m wide main exit, and a smaller secondary exit, located within marquees.
Following conversations where the event organisers and Axiomatic consulted to review the entrances, Axiomatic recommended Irisys people counters owing to the ease at which several devices could be interconnected to create wide opening monitoring.
Our engineers installed the counters on mounting poles provided by the organisers within the marquees, in a daisy chain to cover the widths.
Axiomatic served up a cloud-based monitoring screen allowing event teams to monitor the occupancy of the main site. We also provided staff filtering by way of lanyards which meant that the figures were not skewed by the festival team moving in and out of the entrance.
The occupancy system was installed on the site’s main network infrastructure. Following the event, the counters were simply taken down and returned to Axiomatic.
We have provided the occupancy system for Hay Festival for two years now and look forward to returning in 2025 to work with the event again.
