Staff Exclusion – Different Approaches

Why Exclude Staff?

The primary purpose of excluding staff from the footfall count is to better understand the true number of visitors and the opportunity size within a supervised area.

Here we take a look at the different approaches to detect and filter staff from your footfall data and the pros and cons of each method.

Staff exclusion can be done by the sensor hardware or manual or automated processing

  • Counter Hardware - Wearable Tags

    Counter Hardware - Wearable Tags

    Pros

+  Offers a clear distinction between staff and customers

+  Offers the ability to understand staff and customer interactions, but in a limited manner

    Cons

Staff need to remember to wear the tag

The tag needs to be visible to the sensor (which can be impractical)

Can detract from smart uniforms/bran appearance

Maintenance of tag stock is a consideration

    May have additional operational costs

  • Counter Hardware - Bluetooth Devices

    Counter Hardware - Bluetooth Devices

    Pros

+  Offers a clear distinction between staff and customers

+  Offers the ability to understand staff and customer interactions, but in a limited manner

+ Can be carried in a pocket so more discreet

    Cons

    Battery management

    Maintenance of devices

    May have additional operational costs

Staff need to remember to carry the device

Bluetooth/wireless tags may be prone to attenuation

  • Counter Hardware - Clothing

    Counter Hardware - Clothing

    Pros

+  Offers a clear distinction between staff and customers

+  Offers the ability to understand staff and customer interactions, but in a limited manner

Permits exclusions beyond just staff. Repeat visitors can be excluded (shoppers, service agents, delivery agents etc)

    Requires little staff interaction

The algorithm is maintained, improved and deployed remotely

    Cons

    – Intensive system learning process

Requires a defined and fully adopted uniform policy

    – Additional hardware requirements

May incur additional capex and opex

    – Deviations from the defined policy need relearning

    – Relatively new technology

  • Manual Data Processing

    Manual Data Processing

The user deducts from the source data a value representing perceived staff movements through the supervised area

    Pros

+  Little to no cost involved

+  Deductions can be as tailored as the user wishes

    Cons

    – Assumes non-automated processing of data and information

    Cumbersome and labour intensive

    – Not particularly scaleable or suitable for organisations with large supervised zones

  • Automated Data Processing

    Automated Data Processing

Software is programmed to deduct from the source data variable values

    Pros

+  Little to no cost involved (once the logic has been developed)

+  Automated deductions can be customised by zone

    Cons

    – Changes can ne problematic if the data is being consumed by other systems, e.g. an API transaction takes place every 15 minutes, but the staff movement deduction happens at the end of the day. Or if data is being reviewed during the day
