January 1998

Early Beginnings

A number of Windows software products grew out of the innovation of the team, and in 1998 some research was done using a video camera to count people. At that time, it needed a top-of-the-range PC, together with a £300 camera and a £500 interface card to count a single entrance! This system was installed in a small number of locations, but did not prove a success because of the high capital cost, and the system’s susceptibility to count inaccurately when lighting levels changed.
