According to a recent report by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, smart technology can reduce a commercial buildings energy use by nearly a fifth.
The report focused on 4 work environments: the office, retail, hospitals, and the hotel industry.
Office environments have the most potential savings - around 18% of total energy consumption on average, with retail stores and hospitals close behind with average savings of 14%. Hotels that embrace technologies such as guest management systems and automated check-ins were found to have made 8% average savings.
The report looked at a variety of factors which can influence energy use, as well as a variety of smart technologies. Systems from simple occupancy and motion sensors, right up to complex, multi-tiered building management systems.
The report highlighted the differing levels of adoption across the studied industries, for example around 75% of hospitals use some kind of smart technology, while only 40% of hotels contain them.
Further analysis showed that smart buildings can yield increased worker productivity, increasing the ROI of a smart building system.
